On 5 March 2026 I spoke at the Cleveland Library about Edward Field Jones and Coochiemudlo Island. An obsession with Matthew Flinders by a quirky historian still ripples through island life.

Warrnambool Family History Group

On Tuesday, 10 February 2026, I spoke to members of the Warrnambool Family History Group about William Wall and his descendants. Thank you David Turland, President of the WFHG, for hosting the occasion and for the beautiful publication about the restoration of the Warrnambool Pioneers Board.

For a young groomsman transported to Van Diemen’s Land in 1835, William left his mark in Warrnambool and the district.

I really enjoyed talking with the MPFHS about female convict Ann Simmons, who was transported to Van Diemen’s Land in 1823. Ann’s daughter, Eliza, travelled with her on the Lord Sidmouth.

My story about Ann features in a chapter of the Convict Women’s Press Book Convict Lives: Mothers’ Trials and Triumphs, an anthology of fascinating, heart-wrending, humerous and inspiring stories.
